The BigFix platform works by deploying policy-intelligent agents to every endpoint computer on a network, where the agents continuously report up-to-date system information to give keep administrators real-time visibility into hardware and software properties and configurations on each computer. The agents also monitor for any software configuration changes, patches, vulnerabilities or other information that may pertain to the computer. When an administrator requests a change, or when the agent detects that the computer has fallen out of compliance with policies, the agent takes the appropriate action or modifies the configuration to execute the desired change. Now, administrators can make decisions based on the current state of computers throughout the network --from a few hundred to tens of thousands of computers across multiple operating environments--and then deploy software, patches or configuration changes across any or all specified sets of computers in seconds or minutes versus hours or days. BigFix agents automatically and immediately report back on the effectiveness of the action, and alert administrators in real-time if an action must be redeployed or if the endpoint needs any additional remediation actions.”

Strong security is built into the BigFix platform from the ground up. BigFix agents verify all software deployed to endpoint systems via a secure hash algorithm to ensure authenticity. In addition, BigFix uses Public Key Infrastructure to digitally sign all actions to agents to ensure that no unauthorized person or malicious intruder can hijack networked assets.
